Magic in the Mountains ... Friday, June 13 - Saturday, June 21 2008
Nestled in the Alleghany Mountains,
this fun-filled community event spans an entire week and features various activities throughout Alleghany County. Clifton Forge will feature arts, crafts, antiques, railroad history at The C&O Heritage Center I Clifton Forge and live entertainment at the historic Masonic Theatre, scheduled for the weekend of June 13th-14th, 2007. The Alleghany Arts and Crafts Center will welcome your visit as well. Nearby Douthat State Park offers history and nature programs as well as entertainment throughout the week. Covington showcases arts, crafts, great food, and live entertainment on Saturday, June 20-21 as the festival comes to a close. Be sure to visit Covington's
historic downtown district, the Jackson River Recreation Sport Complex and the newly renovated C&O Depot on Maple Avenue. Humpback Bridge and Falling Spring are other local attractions that shouldn't be missed. Contact the Alleghany Highlands Chamber of Commerce for details.
Recreation sites are plentiful in the Alleghany Highlands. One mile west of the Firmstone Manor , Longdale National Recreation Area has a variety of trails and a mountain lake for swimming. Outdoor enthusiasts and photographers will want to see the North Mountain Trail. George Washington National Forest roads and trails are ideal for hiking and mountain biking. You can soak in the fabled hot mineral waters of the Jefferson Pools or go to Douthat State Park and Lake Moomaw for swimming, boating, fishing and hiking.
Within 30 minutes of Clifton Forge, the historic towns of Lexington and Hot Springs offer many antique shops, auctions, outdoor theater, concerts and fine dining. Lexington is home to the Virginia Horse Center, VMI and Washington and Lee University. The Homestead, located in Hot Springs, is regarded as one of the finest year-round resorts in the world. It offers a convention center, three championship golf courses, ski slopes, tennis courts, riding trails, skeet fields, and many other facilities for the pleasure of its guests.
